Suarez left Liverpool for the Catalan club last summer in a £75million deal.

Some Barca fans questioned the fee given Suarez's impending ban for biting Italian defender Giorgio Chiellini at the World Cup.

But Enrique claims it was money well spent after Suarez pounced in the 56th minute to swing the match in Barca's favour.

He said: "We are very happy that Luís Suárez is such a decisive player, thanks to his goals, his attitude and what he brings to the team.

"That's why we paid what we paid for for him."

The win sees Barca go four points clear at the top of La Liga and Enrique couldn't disguise his delight at beating the club's fierce rivals.

He added: "We have witnessed a very intense game between the two best teams in the world. It's a lovely victory for us because it's against our eternal rivals and is also important for la Liga.

"We are always out to keep possession of the ball, but the rivals are also playing. You have to know how to read a game. We scored our first goal from dead-ball play and goals like that can be very gratifying for all of us.

"Messi is totally free to move around as he pleases and what we have to do is counter-balance Leo's movements on the pitch. There were many players focused only on the ball in the first half.

"There are ten vital games left in la Liga and points can go astray in any of them. We are where we wanted to be - at the top of the league."
