Louis Van Gaal: I could stay at Manchester United for FIVE more years

LOUIS VAN GAAL insists there is plenty of mileage left on his managerial clock, although Manchester United will be his last football job.

The 63-year-old Dutchman dropped a strong hint that he is open to discussions over extending his three-year contract.

Van Gaal admitted: “I can confirm this will be my last job but there could be five years to go yet. I can extend my contract.

“I signed for three years because you can build something up in that time. I don’t know how I would react if Manchester United asked me to extend.”

Van Gaal (left) believes he is working for the biggest club in the country and revealed he turned down today’s opponents Liverpool, who instead appointed Brendan Rodgers.

“Yes, it was very pleasing (to be sounded out by Liverpool),” Van Gaal said. “It’s in the past. I could have worked every year but I take sabbaticals because I have to please my wife, my kids and my grandchildren.”

“Regrets about not going to Liverpool? I don’t want to answer that question because it’s in the past and we are now in the present.

“I’m the manager of Manchester United, the number one club in England

The Anfield club made their approach when Kenny Dalglish’s second spell in charge ended.

“Did I speak to Liverpool? Yes. But that is not so interesting anymore. Last week I was asked the same about Tottenham. I have spoken to a lot of clubs. It’s not so interesting, it’s in the past. It’s not good for Liverpool, Tottenham or for me to reopen things that are in the past.”he added.

Instead Van Gaal opted to become Holland’s manager and Liverpool appointed Brendan Rodgers.

“Yes, it was very pleasing (to be sounded out by Liverpool). I could have worked every year but I take sabbaticals because I have to please my wife, my kids and my grandchildren.”he explained.

“Regrets about not going to Liverpool? I don’t want to answer that question because it’s in the past and we are now in the present.

“I’m the manager of Manchester United, the number one club in England but Liverpool also has a very good record in history.”
