Sterling is yet to commit his future to Liverpool despite an offer being on the table

England starlet Sterling told Rodgers this week he wanted to “concentrate on his football” as negotiations to extend his current deal, which expires in 2017, were pushed back until the summer.

Sterling repeated the message his agent, Aidy Ward, had delivered last week and the impasse raises the prospect of the 20-year-old being sold in the summer.

Liverpool have seen Sterling reject a deal worth £90,000 a week, plus bonuses, and Rodgers acknowledged he cannot second guess whether talks will be concluded positively.

Manchester City are among the teams monitoring the situation and Rodgers said: “We won’t reach agreement between now and end of season.

“That has been made clear by Raheem’s representative and boy himself. He wants to concentrate on his football and see in the summer.

“The club have received that advice from his adviser and Raheem has mentioned it to me. That’s it.”

Liverpool have had further talks with Jordan Henderson and are moving in the right direction as regards agreeing an extension with the midfielder.
