Sam Vokes vows to boost Burnley's bid for survival by downing boyhood club Southampton

SAM VOKES hopes Southampton’s fans see something of his own boyhood Saints heroes in his performance at St Mary’s today.

Vokes says he looked up to Southampton favourites such as Matt Le Tissier

The Southampton-born Burnley striker grew up watching his hometown club play at the Dell and based his game on two of the club’s striking legends.

“It was the era of Matt Le Tissier and Alan Shearer. They were goalscorers and as a striker, they’re the players you look up to,” Vokes said.

“I tried to mould my game on them but it’s certainly setting a high target there. It would be nice to follow those though.

“It’s the team I’ve followed since I was a youngster and I still look out for their results. But it’s a professional view now – we want to go there and get the points we need.”

Vokes was taken to his first Southampton match by father Tim – a 3-2 win over Sheffield United in 1993 – and was also a member of the Junior Saints club.

And the 25-year-old forward revealed that his old man may well be rooting against him this afternoon.

“My dad used to take me to the Dell to watch games,” Vokes said. “I’ve asked him where he is going to be sat and I think he’s in with his mates in the Southampton end!

“It’s the game I always look forward to. It’s the club I supported as a child so I’m looking forward to going back down there.”
