Carrick's new deal will keep him at the club until June 2016.

The 33-year-old joined United in 2006 for £18 million and has won five Premier League titles, the Champions League in 2008 and the League Cup in 2010, making 376 appearances.

In December 2014, he was appointed United vice-captain after taking over the role from Darren Fletcher.

Carrick said: “It’s fantastic to know that I can continue my incredible journey with this great club. I am thoroughly enjoying my football and the team are progressing in the right direction under Louis van Gaal.

“We are all incredibly focussed on getting this club back to where it belongs and competing with the best teams in the world.”

At his press conference ahead of Sunday's clash with Liverpool, manager Louis Van Gaal confirmed the England international's new contract and importance to his plans.

He said: “I am delighted that Michael has extended his contract. Michael is a great reader of the game and his exceptional versatility has enabled me to play him in different positions on the pitch.

“He is my vice-captain and I have been impressed by his professionalism both on and off the pitch. He is a great inspiration for any young player.”

Carrick was named by Roy Hodgson in England's 24-man squad for their upcoming games against Lithuania and Italy.

He has not made an appearance for the national team since England faced Poland in October 2013 and he was left out of last summer’s World Cup squad.
