CHELSEA manager Jose Mourinho says he will give Ruben Loftus-Cheek a chance to shine before considering buying Paul Pogba.

Big things are expected of Ruben Loftus-Cheek at Chelsea

The Blues are reported suitors for Juventus ace Pogba, as are Manchester United, who lost the player on a free transfer in 2012.

Manchester City and Real Madrid are expected to bid for the 22-year-old midfielder this summer, and Chelsea could join the bidding war.

But Mourinho insisted that for now he was happy with his midfield men, indicating he will promote Loftus-Cheek, 19, to the first-team next season.

He said: “I don’t think about Pogba or other players.

"The only thing I can tell you is that you look to our midfield players and between (Cesc) Fabregas, (Nemanja) Matic, Ramires, Ruben and (John Obi) Mikel we have a good group.

“And I believe a lot in Ruben, and I repeat next season the squad will be made in a way where Ruben is not a number, where he is a player to compete for a position."

Loftus-Cheek has made just two appearances for Chelsea this season, with his most recent outing against title chasers Manchester City in January.

And Mourinho revealed why he has resisted throwing the youngster into the first XI this campaign.

“I think Ruben next season will be not just a first-team player like he is at the moment, he will be a player to play and compete for a position,” Mourinho said.

“I don’t do it now because I don’t think it’s a good moment to do it. It’s the moment for his evolution, to protect him.

“At the moment we think it’s best to go with the players with more experience, who have played for a long time and have lots of experience.

“Ruben is a player that next season I expect him, not just to play  a few times, but I expect him to compete for a place in the team.”
