The striker, who has scored 26 goals this season, was included in the 24-man squad coach Roy Hodgson named yesterday for the Euro 2016 qualifier with Lithuania a week today.

Kane, who effectively replaces Liverpool's Rickie Lambert, will be hopeful of making his debut over the coming games with skipper Wayne Rooney, Danny Sturridge and Arsenal’s Danny Welbeck in competition for the forward berths.

Shortly after the announcement, the 21-year-old tweeted: "Huge honour to be called up to the England squad! Very proud day for me and my family! Thank you all for the kind messages! #England."

England face Italy in a friendly in Turin four days later.

Sturridge was one of four Liverpool players named as he returned to the fold after five months out with injury. Manchester United’s Michael Carrick and Aston Villa’s Fabian Delph also feature.

Hodgson has taken the decision to name just two goalkeepers with Joe Hart and Fraser Forster named. West Brom’s Ben Foster is currently injured.

Ashley Young and Ryan Mason were both overlooked by Hodgson, whose squad meets next Monday at St George’s Park.

Everton youngster John Stones is set to be included in the U21s squad.

Hodgson also tried to put the demise of domestic clubs in the Champions League this season into perspective and insisted English football was not at rock bottom.

"It is a very high standard of football," said Hodgson.

"But I feel sorry for the club coaches going into these games because the standard is so high. We seem to under-estimate the teams in other countries. We have no god given right to get through.”
