Arsene Wenger: I would LOVE to challenge for the title but we need Chelsea to slip up

ARSENE WENGER says he would “love” to be in a position to challenge Chelsea for the Premier League title.

Newcastle v Arsenal - Premier League Preview

The Gunners sit third in the table, seven points off Chelsea, with a game more played.

They face Newcastle this weekend as the season draws towards its close, while the Blues travel to Hull City.

And Wenger admits that Chelsea, who are also six points ahead of second-place Manchester City, are unlikely to throw away their lead.

“We would love to (be in the title race),” Wenger said. “At the moment we are too far away from Chelsea but we have an opportunity every week to get closer and for that we need positive results from us and negative results from Chelsea.

Jose Mourinho's Chelsea currently top the Premier League table by six points and have a game in hand

“The one thing we can master is positive results from us. I believe that Chelsea have a very good cushion and very good security.”

Chelsea have won just one of their last three league games, boosting Arsenal’s hopes of a late title challenge.

They drew 1-1 with Southampton in their last outing, despite taking an early lead through Diego Costa’s 18th strike of the season.

And Wenger believes Jose Mourinho’s men were unfortunate not to win that clash.

“They still have a game in hand and I believe they are too far apart at the moment,” he said.

“They suffered a little bit in the first half maybe but in the second half they could as well have won the game.”
