Angel Di Maria sounds battle cry for Manchester United ahead of Liverpool showdown

ANGEL DI MARIA has emphasised the importance of Manchester United's clash with Liverpool, claiming it is a season-defining fixture for the club.

United travel to Anfield on Sunday (1:30pm) looking to do a league double over their bitter adversaries after beating the Reds 3-0 at Old Trafford in December.

Louis van Gaal's side are two points ahead of Liverpool in fourth spot, and Sunday's result could go a long way to determining whether or not his team secure a Champions League spot.

And Di Maria has called on his United team-mates to finish the campaign on a high.

"We are all aware that a number of big games are just around the corner, and the season will be decided by these fixtures," Di Maria told the club's official match day programme United Review.

"We know all about these upcoming games and we have been thinking and talking about them for quite some time now.

"We've known that everything would be at stake over this final period of the season.

"Everyone at the club is 100 per cent confident, we know we want to get back into the Champions League and that we want to be fighting it out.

"We'll battle hard right to the end of the season. From what I know of the club, United always fight right to the end and that's what we're going to do."

Di Maria could be in contention to return to the starting line-up after serving a one-match suspension for the red card he received in the 2-1 FA Cup quarter-final defeat to Arsenal.
