According to Spanish publication Sports COPE, Valencia president Amadeo Salvo and Director Francisco Rufete have discussed Otamendi's departure.

And they are believed to be considering allowing him to leave the club if the £40m clause is met by United.

Louis van Gaal already had a £25m bid for the Argentinian rejected last summer.

And reports suggest he's prepared to dip into United's coffers once again to seal the deal.

Otamendi has enjoyed a strong season at the Mestalla Stadium, with Valencia boasting the second best defensive record in La Liga.

The 27-year-old has made 25 league appearances for the club this season, scoring two goals.
