Olivier Giroud and Aaron Ramsey earned a 2-0 win in Monte Carlo but it was not enough to for Arsenal to avoid being knocked out of the competition 3-3 on away goals.
Ozil caused controversy by exchanging shirts with Monaco's Geoffrey Kondogbia at the break in the Stade Louis II.
And Manchester United legend Scholes was quick to condemn the German midfielder's decision.

"I don't like it. At the end of the game, maybe. But still I'm not a big fan then," he said.
"You do it that once you're in the tunnel or in the dressing room, out of the way of everyone. At half-time, it's not for me.
ITV commentator Clive Tyldesley joined Scholes in criticising Ozil.

As the players left the field at half-time, he vented: "I don't quite know why we are seeing this."
Ozil was unconcerned about his shirt-swap antics after the game though, preferring to discuss his frustration at exiting the Champions League.
"It's so hard to be kicked out of the #ucl after such a result and such a game ... #MONvAFC" he posted on Twitter.
