Monaco 0 - Arsenal 2: Defiant Gunners fall short as Wenger's men knocked out on away goals
ARSENAL did exactly what was expected of them by mounting an impressive fight-back against Monaco but, ultimately, falling short and exiting the Champions League on away goals.
Olivier Giroud
The Gunners - through goals from Olivier Giroud and Aaron Ramsey - beat the French side at the Stad Louis II but were knocked out of the Champions League in the round of 16 for the fifth year in a row.
No team in the Champions League had ever overturned a two-goal deficit away from home in the second leg and Arsene Wenger's side, against his old club, were unable to re-write the history books.
Giroud gave Arsenal hope firing in after 36 minutes and Alexis Sanchez thought he'd won his side a penalty shortly after, only to be booked for diving.
Ramsey, a second-half substitute, struck Arsenal's second with 11 minutes on the clock.
But in the end the resolute Monaco side held firm and made Wenger's men pay for the first-leg collapse.
