United have been inextricably linked with a move for the Portuguese superstar who rose to prominence with the Premier League giants before sealing an £80million switch to Real Madrid in 2009.
Ronaldo has come under fire in recent weeks with Los Blancos, especially after they narrowly scraped through to the quarter-finals of the Champions League following a 4-3 defeat at home to Schalke.
The Sun reported yesterday that Fergie enjoyed dinner with Ronaldo after the game.
Cristiano Ronaldo could make a sensational return to Manchester United
Sources close to the ex-United boss claim Fergie told Ronaldo he should come back to Old Trafford.
It was also rumoured earlier in the week that Louis van Gaal had met Ronaldo's agent, Jorge Mendes, to discuss a potential £71.1m offer for the player.
Ronaldo's popularity with the Real fans has plunged to a new low, with 32 per cent of the supporters wanting to see him dropped from the side.
Yet he has still managed to rattle home 43 goals in 41 appearances this season.
