Fellaini, Michael Carrick and Wayne Rooney bagged first-half strikes as United eased past Spurs with an emphatic 3-0 win.

Many believe the 27-year-old Fellaini's performance at Old Trafford was his best of the season so far, but Van Gaal disagrees.

The Dutchman said on the Belgian: “He had already played a lot of games that he had a big influence.

"He scored a lot of goals but he also has assists, and now we play also in that shape in the midfield, and that was good. I'm very happy for him.

Van Gaal added: "I think the midfield was controlling the game.

"I think Herrera played a very good match but also Mata played a very good match."
