Goals from Maroune Fellaini, Michael Carrick and Wayne Rooney earned United a 3-0 win over Tottenham today to push them five points clear of fifth-placed Liverpool in the Premier League.

United's next game is against the Reds, who face Swansea tomorrow night, at Anfield next weekend.

And Van Gaal insists that, despite the win today, the Liverpool clash is of far more importance.

"We've made a very big first step. But now we have to go to Liverpool who are also a competitor of ours," he said.

"Maybe, apart from the first five minutes, we had control over the match.

"We scored beautiful goals, and didn't give so much away. We played very well."
