The south-coast side fell behind in the 11th minute to a Diego Costa header but responded quickly and equalised through a Dusan Tadic penally after Sadio Mane was fouled.

They could even have entered the break ahead but Mane was denied by a save from Chelsea goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois.

Koeman also has his goalkeeper Fraser Forster to thank after he pulled off several saves in the second half including a double reaction block from Oscar and Hazard on the rebound.

And the Dutchman was full of praise for the England goalkeeper.

He told Sky Sports: “I think we had a fantastic reaction after the 1-0 and played some great football. We had some good chances and managed to draw out the penalty.

“The second half, Chelsea pressed and we had more difficulty in keeping the ball. They had some chances and Forster was great again today. It was great spirit of the team.”
