Memphis Depay is reportedly wanted by Manchester United and Liverpool

United manager Louis van Gaal is ready to capture the £20million-rated star, who played under the boss for the Netherlands national side.

But reports in the Sunday Mirror suggest Liverpool are ready to make enquiries about Depay's availability and have been tracking the winger for more than two years.

The paper claim Reds scouts are close to Depay's agent, Alex Kroes, and they are therefore more likely to offer a contract to meet the player's demands.

A "delegation" from Liverpool has been in monthly contact with PSV, meeting Kroes and watching the 21-year-old's progress.

Memphis Depay Player Profile

Former United scout Ed van Stijn said of Depay earlier this month: "You can't judge Depay on his technique.

"With him you look at what he's doing with that technique to utilise it as much as possible.

"For example, look how often he makes sure he finds himself in one-on-ones facing the goal. It all comes down to details.

"If you compare him to a young Cristiano Ronaldo at the same age, then Depay has more strings to his bow. I like him better.

"Ronaldo made many of the same mistakes at Manchester United as he did when he was 17."
