Tim Sherwood: I'll give Scott Sinclair a contract if he continues to shine

ASTON VILLA boss Tim Sherwood admits he is prepared to throw Scott Sinclair a career lifeline if he can help shoot them to survival.

Scott Sinclair has found form since joining Villa on loan

On-loan Sinclair has finally stepped from the shadows after a nightmare two-and-a-half-seasons since joining Manchester City, where he is surplus to requirements.

The winger has scored three goals in the five matches since Sherwood was named boss - the last of them sealing a place at Wembley in last Saturday's FA Cup quarter-final win over West Brom.

"Has he a future here beyond the summer if he continues to perform? Yes - and I think he is eager to do that," said Sherwood, whose 17th-placed team travel to Sunderland today.

"It is a huge club, he realises that. He obviously wants to play in the Premier League, as we do, so it is something that can be discussed once we are safe - in a couple of weeks!"

Two teams who have scored the fewest in the division are not suddenly going to be in a game that finishes 3-3

Sherwood has been impressed with the attitude of both Sinclair and fellow loanee Tom Cleverley - who is also unwanted at his parent club and City's rivals, Manchester United, where his contract expires in the summer.

"They realise they are fighting for their futures, whether that be at this club or with someone else," he added.

Sunderland manager Gus Poyet is also expecting a fight - and has warned fans to expect a war of attrition at the Stadium of Light today.

Villa have scored just 15 goals in 28 games, while Sunderland have found the net only 23 times from the same number of matches.

And Poyet said: "I can't see too many goals in the game. Two teams who have scored the fewest in the division are not suddenly going to be in a game that finishes 3-3."
