That is the assessment of United manager Louis van Gaal, who has stoutly defended his selection policy of the £6million Monaco loanee.

Falcao has started just one of United's last four games, while Rooney has been an ever present in Van Gaal's XI for most of the season.

And the England captain has shone in his role as lead striker, scoring four goals in fives games in the absence of Robin van Persie.

And ahead of United's Premier League clash with Tottenham on Sunday, Van Gaal insisted he will stick with Rooney as the lead guy.

“At a club like Manchester United, it’s more difficult than at a minor club because he has competitors here and now Wayne is playing there and Wayne is scoring," Van Gaal said.

"So you always have to compare players with each other but you also need luck and you need a lot of luck when you’re a striker because you are more dependent on your fellow players."
