Carlo Ancelotti could make a shock return to England

Ancelotti has come under the microscope in recent weeks after Real Madrid's surprising slump in form.

The Italian was given the dreaded vote of confidence by the board after scraping through to the quarter-finals of the Champions League by virtue of a 5-4 aggregate win over Schalke.

Spanish paper Marca, who have acted as a mouthpiece for Real, claims Ancelotti, who previously managed Chelsea, is keen to return to the Premier League one day.

This is despite suggestions he is in no rush to leave the Bernabeu.

Manchester City has been discussed as another possible destination for the decorated manager, and though Van Gaal is on track to meet United's target of a top-four finish, the Old Trafford hot seat could be available for Ancelotti to take over if the Dutchman falls short.

Marca also suggest that United's interest in Ancelotti dates back to the Sir Alex Ferguson era.

It is thought Ferguson wanted Ancelotti to replace him when he retired at the end of the 2012/13 season.

And at the Bernabeu, where expectations to deliver success home and abroad are sky high, Ancelotti might be running out of time to convince Florentino Perez to keep hold of him.
