It's not a crisis - Steven Gerrard reflects on Liverpool, Chelsea and Spurs European exits

STEVEN GERRARD insists English football will regain its prowess on the European stage, despite Premier League clubs failing to impress abroad this season.

The Liverpool captain was out injured when the Reds fell in the Europa League last-32 stage to Turkish side Besiktas after a disappointing Champions League group stage.

Tottenham also fell at the same hurdle - to Fiorentina - while Chelsea crashed out of the Champions League last-16 yesterday to PSG.

Meanwhile, both Arsenal and Manchester City appear unlikely to progress to the Champions League quarter-finals after home defeats in their last-16 first legs.

Everton, who play in the Europa League this evening, appear the only English club left with a realistic chance of winning European honours but Gerrard believes success will return to these shores soon.

"I don't think it has been our year but I don't think it is a crisis," he said.

"I don't think it will repeat as the years go by.

"Teams will bounce back, teams will make signings in the summer.

"It has happened before teams have gone out early and the next year one comes back and wins it.

"I don't think it is a major problem but as a whole we haven't been good enough."

Gerrard was speaking ahead of the Liverpool All Star Game, which kicks off later this month.
