Gary Cahill put the Blues ahead with his late strike but it was former Chelsea defender David Luiz who sent the tie to extra time with his equaliser.

Eden Hazard's 96th minute penalty put the hosts back in front but Thiago Silva levelled again for the visitors after 114 minutes, sending PSG through on away goals.

And United skipper Rooney was quick to praise the visitors' performance despite being a man down after Zlatan Ibrahimovic was sent his marching orders after lunging in on Oscar.

It was the Sweden international's fourth red card in the Champions League.

"That is one of the best performances I've ever seen with 10 men from PSG," said Rooney.

Chelsea's exit means Manchester City and Arsenal are the only british teams left in Europe's elite competition.
