Valencia made a howler as he played a poor back-pass that enabled Danny Welbeck to slot home the winner for the visitors.

The 2-1 defeat ended Louis van Gaal's hopes of lifting a trophy in his first season with United.

And in a heartfelt message to fans on Facebook, Valencia wrote: "I want to ask apologise to my companions and to the fans of Manchester United.

"I want to apologise to my teammates and the fans of Manchester United. Tomorrow is another day and keep working."

Valencia also came under attack from television pundits, with Roy Keane labelling his display as 'disgraceful'.

He said: "The lads have just downed tools there.

"It's an absolute schoolboy error and United have given Arsenal so much time and freedom there."
