Balotelli - like many Premier League stars - has been given some time off with Liverpool out of the FA Cup.

And the Italian international took the opportunity to drop in on former colleagues and teammates at his former club.

Balotelli posted a picture on Instagram with injured AC Milan star Stephan El-Sharaawy, with the caption: "Milan, what a pleasure to see you."

Milan prompted further confusion about what Balotelli was doing at the club after posting a picture on their site that appeared to show the striker in training.

The image - which may have been from last season - was then pulled from an article about the club's activities this morning.

The 24-year-old has failed to live up to expectations after making a £15m move to Anfield in the summer and has been linked with a return to Serie A in the summer.

But the player's agent Mino Raiola says that he is simply taking time to adapt to Brendan Rodgers' demands.

He told RMC: "Right now, I think Mario has a very interesting development for his career.

"He has found a coach who asks of him things that had never been requested of him until now, including the discipline of running without the ball.

"This allows him to grow as a person and as a football player. He'll come out even stronger.

"He is proud of his team and that is the most important."
