Alexis Sanchez and Santi Cazorla celebrate Danny Welbeck's Old Trafford winner

MANCHESTER UNITED
DAVID DE GEA: Will be disappointed to have been beaten at near post for first goal. Could not do anything about the second. Excellent save to deny Sanchez at the end. 7/10

ANTONIO VALENCIA: Handed Arsenal victory with woeful back pass. Lacked confidence going forward. 4/10

CHRIS SMALLING: Not his worst performance, but hardly exuded confidence and presence either. An 'okay' defender. 5/10

MARCOS ROJO: Booked and lucky to not have penalty awarded against him for pulling back Welbeck. Better at left-back in second half. 5/10

LUKE SHAW: Not overly impressive before being removed at the interval. 5/10

DALEY BLIND: Drifted through the game without having a big impact. 6/10

ANDER HERRERA: Produced little and hooked at half-time. Booked for needless tackle on Alexis Sanchez. 5/10

ANGEL DI MARIA: Fantastic cross for the United goal. Petulant act got him sent off and left his team facing an even bigger task. 4/10

MAROUANE FELLAINI: Couple of decent knockdowns but as unpredictable as ever with the ball at his feet and in the tackle. Booked. 5/10

ASHLEY YOUNG: Threatening presence down the flank. Only black mark against him was the booking he earned for a petty foul on Sanchez. 6/10

WAYNE ROONEY: Top header for goal. Looked threatening through first half, but faded after the break. 6/10

SUBSTITUTES:
PHIL JONES (on for Shaw, 45): Put Valencia on the spot with his short pass on the halfway line. 5/10

MICHAEL CARRICK (on for Herrera, 45): Did not add anything to United's attacking play. 5/10

ADNAN JANUZAJ (on for Rojo, 72): Pace and trickery caused Arsenal problems, although booked for going down in the penalty area. Maybe should have come on earlier. 6/10

Di MariaPA

Di Maria was sent off for shoving referee Michael Oliver

ARSENAL
WOJCIECH SZSZESNY: Wanted to make an impression on his return to the side but, despite attempts to look assertive, still looked vulnerable. 6/10

HECTOR BELLERIN: Rightly booked after dreadful early challenge on Young but recovered composure and gave support to attacks. 6/10

PER MERTESACKER: Unconvincing in possession and had some uneasy moments. 6/10

LAURENT KOSCIELNY: Made a vital interception to cut out a United chance but faced a lot of pressure. 6/10

NACHO MONREAL: Got into good forward positions and finished his goal well but had some difficult moments up against Di Maria. 7/10

FRANCIS COQUELIN: Quietly efficient in a deep central role. 6/10

SANTI CAZORLA: Operated from deep but an ever willing runner who probed the United defence. 8/10

ALEX OXLADE-CHAMBERLAIN: Had made some good strong runs before his mazy dribble to set up Monreal's goal but injury cut short an impressive display. 7/10

MESUT OZIL: Vision and awareness were excellent and even made some important tackles before being pushed wide. 7/10

ALEXIS SANCHEZ: A constant danger for United, always wanting possession and usually making good use of it. Only denied a goal by De Gea brilliance near the end. 9/10

DANNY WELBECK: It did not look like it was going to happen for him on his return to Old Trafford until he pounced on an error to settle the game just after the hour. 7/10

SUBSTITUTES:
AARON RAMSEY (for Oxlade-Chamberlain, 51): Brought some solidity into central midfield. Booked. 7/10

CALUM CHAMBERS (for Bellerin, 66): Had to deal with plenty of pressure in latter stages but coped well. 6/10

OLIVIER GIROUD (for Welbeck, 74): Brought fresh energy up front but did not get opportunities. 6/10
