The 24-year-old pounced on a horrendous back pass by Antonio Valencia in the 61st minute to send the holders through.

The England striker left his boyhood club to join the Gunners over the summer in a £16million deal.

And Wenger was full of praise for Welbeck, insisting he fully deserved to get on the scoresheet.

The Emirates boss said: "I believe he is just happy to score. He worked very hard today and he was rewarded by a good goal."
