Di Maria protested a booking he received when going down too easily under a challenge.

He grabbed Oliver as part of the protests, which Van Gaal believes gave the referee no choice but to issue the second yellow.

Arsenal went on to win the game 2-1 thanks to Danny Welbeck's second-half strike and Van Gaal was left to rue his midfielder's actions.

"In Spain he knows that he doesn't touch the referee, but that is also in his emotion," Van Gaal said.

"I've already spoken with him, he knows my opinion but also I have to see on the video.

"I think he's touched the referee and that's forbidden in every country, so he has no excuses."
