Jonny Howson scored twice with Gary Hooper and Wes Hoolahan also on target. Lee Gregory replied from the spot, but it was the Lions’10th home defeat and leaves them eight points from safety.

Holloway was forced to remain in the dugout because of the abuse he received when he ventured to the technical area and Neil said: “They are quite a hostile crowd – they vent their frustrations and I felt for Ian.”

Holloway said: “I’m fully ready to pick this team up over and again.”

Derby have asked fans for answers on how they can prevent the mistakes that are hindering their promotion bid after letting slip a 2-0 lead against Birmingham.

Goals for Jamie Ward and Tom Ince were cancelled out by an injury-time penalty from Paul Caddis then Clayton Donaldson’s last-gasp equaliser

Keeper Lee Grant said: “Anyone with any ideas on how to stop us making these mistakes should send a postcard to Moor Farm, Derby, DE21.”

Troy Deeney claimed Wolves winger Bakary Sako deserved to be sent off for raising his hands to Watford’s Fernando Forestieri in their 2-2 draw.

Wolves accused Forestieri of play-acting and plan to appeal his red card. However, Watford skipper Deeney said: “You don’t put your hands up there – it’s inviting trouble.”

Watford also finished with 10 men as Tommie Hoban picked up two yellows.

Wigan’s Gaetan Bong wants to ensure Dave Whelan’s 20-year legacy is not thrown away with relegation after Alex Mowatt’s strike for Leeds left the Latics eight points from safety.

Whelan made an emotional farewell speech after handing over the chairman role to grandson David Sharpe. Bong said: “Dave Whelan is the big man here and we need to make sure we stay at this level for him.”

Nottingham Forest boss Dougie Freedman showed his appreciation after strikes from Gary Gardner and Dexter Blackstock gave his side their sixth win in eight games.

“The manager told us afterwards it was a pleasure working with us,” said winger Chris Burke, as Forest overcame a Michael Mancienne own-goal to beat title-chasing Middlesborough 2-1.

Rotherham climbed nine points clear of danger with a 2-0 win at Huddersfield with goals from Kari Arnason and Conor Sammon.

Arnason said: “If we can reproduce this kind of display in the final 10 games we will be OK.”
