The England international replaces Joe Allen in Rodgers' line-up, slotting in as one of the three defenders as Emre Can is pushed into midfield.

Johnson is out of contract at the end of the season and has been linked with a free transfer to Roma.

And speaking ahead of the Cup clash, the Ulsterman explained why Johnson made his final cut.

He said: "Joe Allen's injured, he's been outstanding when playing. We've moved Emre up one and brought in Glen Johnson.

"The team hasn't had too many changes. The back three and goalkeeper have been very consistent but Glen's played this system before and will slot in on the right side."
