MANCHESTER UNITED and Liverpool are set to clash in a bid to sign highly coveted Sporting Lisbon midfielder William Carvalho.

The Portuguese star has a £35million buy-out clause in his contract and could be bought by the Premier League giants for just £25m due to changes to third party ownership.

But according to the Mail on Sunday, the battle between the rivals could see Carvalho's value increase to over £30m.

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers reportedly views the 22-year-old as the ideal replacement for the departing captain Steven Gerrard.

While United manager Louis Van Gaal believes Carvalho can add strength and power to his midfield which has lacked balance at times, with even Wayne Rooney forced to drop deep and defend.

Last month, Carvalho was urged by teammate Nani to join United ahead of their Premier League rivals.
