Antonio Conte reckons Manchester United wanted him in the summer

Van Gaal got the United job following David Moyes' sacking.

But the Dutchman saw out his contract as Holland boss, taking charge of their semi-final run in the World Cup in Brazil.

And Conte, now in charge of Italy, left Juventus last summer but admits Manchester United were interested.

“The English team that looked for me ended up signing the Coach of a national team,” Conte said.

“But my challenge with the national team is personal. Becoming a Coach where usually the job is to select players, it is inspiring.

“I want to turn the Azzurri into a team. I want to work, even though right now I do very little actual work on the pitch.

“This is a burden that I've been bearing for a while, and it manifests itself when I ask for the training camps [which were turned down by the Serie A clubs].

“With the remainder of the time, I coordinate the national youth teams.

“I'm very interested in the youth squads. I bring some of my ideas to the field and I try suggesting others for the young players.”
