Mauricio Pochettino: Adebayor, Kaboul and Capoue must knuckle down in training

MAURICIO POCHETTINO insists senior players Emmanuel Adebayor, Younes Kaboul and Etienne Capoue can still play a part in the rest of the season – provided they knuckle down in training.

None of the trio have featured in a Premier League match-day squad since January 17, although they have continued to train with the first team at the club’s training ground in Enfield.

Kaboul is the club captain and Adebayor one of two vice-captains appointed in September and are again expected to be left in north London for the trip to QPR today.

Similarly, Capoue is set to continue an exile that last saw him in Premier League action back in November.

But Pochettino has not written them off completely and when asked if they were still in his thinking, said: “Yes – always for every game it’s my decision, my choice.

“I think they understand. All of our squad is fully fit and we need to pick 11 players.

“We have 25 players but we only need 18. But all players are with us in the first team for training.”

QPR v Tottenham - Premier League Preview

Adebayor’s absence has not been helped by the stunning for of young striker Harry Kane, who is expected to lead the line again at Loftus Road.

Opposite him will be Charlie Austin, the only Englishman to have scored more Premier League goals than the Spurs player – 15 versus 14.

The two are also vying for international recognition – but Pochettino believes the pair can one day lead the England line together.

“Charlie Austin is a very good player,” he said. “This season he has scored a lot of goals.

“We need to focus on him and Zamora who is another good player.

“Could Austin and Kane play together for England? In football you never know.

“Why not? Charlie Austin is a very good player.”
