The England international joined the ranks at Arsenal in the summer for £16million from Manchester United, scoring seven since.

The 24-year-old failed to live up to his potential at the Red Devils, but Wenger has every faith that he has a ‘great future’ ahead of him in north London.

Welbeck could make his Old Trafford return on Monday night for Arsenal's FA Cup quarter-final clash with United (7:45pm).

In response to whether his Gunners career is heading in the same downhill direction, Wenger replied: “If you check the statistics that is a wrong statement. He is one of the players who played the most games for us.

“He is very important to the team.

“Danny has played many, many games since the start of the season, playing in nearly every single game.

“His position is one of the three up front, central or on either flank - he can play anywhere.

“I believe that Danny puts a lot of effort in for the team. He plays very well and he is an exceptional football player. I’m very, very happy that I bought him and I think he has a great future at Arsenal.”
