Hodgson's present deal is due to expire after the European Championships next summer but, although he will be about to turn 69, he is keen to continue as coach.

The Football Association is aware of his desire to carry on. The organisation will ultimately make the decision on Hodgson's future, although it seems unlikely they would commit to extending his contract before England's performance at the Euros in France in 2016 is scrutinised.

England have made a faultless start to their qualifying campaign for the finals, yet after the nation's premature exit at the group stage of the World Cup last summer the FA are under no pressure to rush into making a decision.

Chairman, Greg Dyke, director of elite development, Dan Ashworth and whoever succeeds Alex Horne as the FA's next chief executive, will rule on whether Hodgson stays or goes.

Hodgson enjoys a strong relationship with Dyke and also Ashworth, the former sporting and technical director at West Brom who appointed Hodgson at The Hawthorns in 2011.

The favourites to replace Hodgson would be U21s coach Gareth Southgate and Gary Neville, one of Hodgson's current assistants, although his lack of managerial experience could be held against him.

Hodgson's enthusiasm to remain at the helm of England football has been pepped by the young, emerging talent during his England tenure, while his regime has also won favourable backing from skipper Wayne Rooney.

England have already spent two tournaments under Hodgson's command. He was parachuted into the role as coach weeks before Euro 2012 following Fabio Capello's departure and led the country to a quarter-final defeat on penalties.

The FA were quick to throw their backing behind Hodgson despite a disappointing exit in Brazil after successive defeats by Uruguay and Italy in their opening two matches.

Hodgson will name his squad on March 19 for the Euro 2016 qualifier with Lithuania and the friendly with Italy at the end of the month.

England then face the Republic of Ireland on June 7 and Slovenia on June 14 before Hodgson is expected to attend the World Cup qualifying draw with Russia on July 26.
