Chelsea are set to offer Nemanja Matic a new deal worth £4.8million a year

The Serbian midfielder will put pen to paper on the new deal, which is worth around £93,000 a week, in the next few days.

Matic has been a revelation this season with his displays in defensive midfield as Chelsea have led the way in the Premier League - after Wednesday night's 1-0 win at West Ham, they are in pole position to win the title.

The 26-year-old will see his pay boosted by around £30,000 a week and extend his stay at Stamford Bridge by another year to 2020.

His importance to Chelsea was illustrated by Mourinho's fight to have the midfielder's three-match ban for his angry reaction to a horror challenge from Burnley's Ashley Barnes reduced on appeal last week.

It was eventually cut from three games to two, but Chelsea are still furious the Serb missed the Capital One Cup final victory over Tottenham last Sunday, and the crucial league win at West Ham.

Mourinho revealed after the Upton Park success that Matic had hurt his ankle sliding on the pitch to join the cup celebrations at Wembley, but is certain he will be fit for the Champions League clash against PSG at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday, with the Blues having drawn the away leg 1-1.

Matic was re-signed by the Chelsea in January last year in a £21m deal, having been allowed to leave for Benfica as a makeweight in the deal which brought defender David Luiz to Chelsea three years earlier.

But Chelsea and Mourinho were keen to tie an increasingly important player down to a long term deal, as they had with Eden Hazard last month.

Skipper John Terry is also set to pen a new one year deal in the coming weeks as Mourinho begins to batten down his squad for next season and the years ahead.
