The Liverpool striker did not alter the course of a routine 2-0 victory in which Jordan Henderson opened the scoring, but his header after 51 minutes sealed the success as he started for the first time in three matches.

Sturridge has been nursed back to full fitness after five months out by manager Brendan Rodgers and said: “I feel good, I felt really good since I came back and I am ready to play every game.

“I don’t want to be eased in but that is what the manager wants.” Liverpool claimed a fourth successive Premier League win as Burnley, whose last win at Anfield came in 1974, struggled to muster any meaningful attempts on goal.

Rodgers saw Emre Can impress and afterwards heaped praised on the defender, saying: “I look at Emre and think give him a couple of years and he could play in any team in world football, that’s how highly I rate him.

“Overall, I thought we were very good. For us to keep them not having a shot on target shows how defensively balanced we were. The balance of the team has improved.”

Burnley manager Sean Dyche refused to offer any excuses and will look to regroup ahead of their next league game against Manchester City.

“Liverpool were too strong for us, that is for sure,” said Dyche. “It is an important time to make sense of what we have learned.

“It is time to make amends and look at things we have used wisely going into the last 10 games.”
