Arsenal News: Wenger to swoop for French defender, HUGE Kondogbia boost, Ozil's message

EXPRESS SPORT brings you the latest news coming out of the Emirates.

QPR v Arsenal - Premier League Preview

Arsenal, who play away at QPR tonight, are putting pressure on the top two.

The Gunners are now only four points behind Man City with 11 games to go.

Arsene Wenger admits he would have let Francis Coquelin leave the club for FREE this summer before he forced his way into the side.

Coquelin was on loan at Charlton and surplus to requirements before injuries to Aaron Ramsey, Jack Wilshere and Mikel Arteta forced Wenger to recall him - planning only for him to be back up.

But after Mathieu Flamini also picked up a knock, the 23-year-old was given his chance and hash't looked back.

And Arsenal, according to reports in France, are looking at their midfield options for the summer with Monaco star Geoffrey Kondogbia under consideration after his display in the Champions League last 16 tie last week.

Kondogbia scored Monaco's opener as they shocked Wenger's side at the Emirates, and reports suggest the French side would be willing to sell for as little as £14.5m this summer.

Mesut Ozil MUST improve says Gilberto Silva

Former Arsenal man Gilberto Silva reckons £42.5m Mesut Ozil MUST improve for Arsenal to challenge for honours again.

Ozil, whose return from injury last month boosted Arsene Wenger's side, has often come in for criticism.

“You speak about Arsenal and how they don’t spend big money on a player often but they did with (Mesut) Ozil and it is always a bit risky,” said Silva. “Coming from Spain it is tough to adapt, it doesn’t always happen straight away.

“I think the most important thing is that the player understands the philosophy of the team, the philosophy of the manager and the expectation from the fans.

“I do really like him as a player but sometimes in the game he does look quite slow, although he has that quality to change the game.

“He can be more decisive for Arsenal for the quality he has, he can be much more decisive for the club."

And finally Arsenal are lining up a move for 21-year-old Lyon defender Samuel Umtiti, according to the Metro.

Arsenal, who signed Gabriel Paulista in the January transfer window, are still looking to bolster their defence and Umtiti - who has helped Lyon to the top of Ligue 1 - is on reportedly Wenger's radar.
