But the manager has said he will not stand in goalkeeper Petr Cech’s way if he decides to leave the club at the end of this campaign – although it will take a “huge fee” to prise the goalkeeper away.

Terry, 34, captained Chelsea to victory in the Capital One Cup final at Wembley on Sunday as they beat Tottenham 2-0 but will be out of contract at the end of this season.

He signed a one-year deal last summer and talks have not yet begun on a new one – but Mourinho has pledged that it will be completed before the end of the season.

The Chelsea manager, whose side face West Ham tonight bidding to extend their five-point lead at the top of the Premier League, said: “It will happen before the end of the season for sure.

“What I can guarantee is that John will be a Chelsea player next season. It’s because I know what my board tell me, and what the player tells me. There is no doubt that he is going to get his contract. I think terms are agreed, but it is not yet signed.”

The situation is very different for Cech. The Czech World Cup goalkeeper, who has won a dozen trophies in a glittering 11-year career at Chelsea, has been displaced by Thibaut Courtois as first-choice – although the 32-year-old was picked for Wembley – and has said he will consider his future if he does not get more games.

“I don’t think Petr is a guy to be persuaded,” said Mourinho, who will bring back Courtois for tonight’s game. “He doesn’t let anyone persuade him. He will make his decision. He’s very mature about making the best decision.

“I will wait, wishing that his decision is to stay. That’s my desire. But I don’t waste my time trying to persuade him, because it’s his decision.”

West Ham striker Carlton Cole has been charged by the FA in relation to a comment posted on social media.

The charge relates to Cole’s involvement in a Twitter altercation with a Tottenham fan following West Ham’s 2-2 Barclays Premier League draw at White Hart Lane on February 22.
