Mauricio Pochettino has admitted it's been hard to lift the players after the League Cup final loss

The hero of the double-winning team passed away yesterday aged 80 and will be given a minute’s applause at White Hart Lane ahead of the game, with former team-mates paying tribute at half-time. The Spurs players will also wear black armbands.

“It will be emotional yes and our players know it is important to get the three points,” he said. “I want to say it is a very sad loss for Tottenham. It is great loss for British football. He was a legend for Tottenham and in British football. A very sad day and I want to send condolences to his family and friends. He is a legend, big player and manager and is a very sad day.”

Even before news reached the club of Mackay’s passing late yesterday evening, Pochettino admitted it had been a difficult game after the Capital One Cup final defeat to Chelsea.

"We need to lift the players, we need to put idea in group that this is the most important game. It is difficult. Expectation was big but we need to forget that and we need to focus. Now we only have one competition and we need to win the three points.

“It was difficult,” Pochettino admitted. “This is the reality. We are disappointed about the result.

“It was a difficult day after the final because we got two feelings, one a bad feeling because of the result but also you feel good because you did your best and performance was good.

“I spoke about the final to improve us,” he said. “This is a good game for growing and a very, very good opportunity to improve.”
