GUS POYET has welcomed Wes Brown's red card reprieve and spoke of his relief in having his key defender available against Hull tonight.

Wes Brown will be available for Sunderland's clash with Hull

Sunderland's Brown successfully appealed against his sending off in the 2-0 defeat at Manchester United on Saturday.

Brown saw red when it was team-mate John O'Shea who hauled down Radamel Falcao to concede a penalty. But despite the success of the recently adopted goalline technology, Poyet would prefer no more introductions.

Poyet said: "This one with Wes was very clear, so it's good news because in an important game against Hull we need him.

"But I'm not going to go against what I believe in. Football is so nice because there are issues and that allows us to comment and talk about it. If football becomes mathematics and everything has to be perfect, it will become a bit more boring.

"Goalline technology has worked well but the rest, I'd leave it as it is."

Poyet said of the Hull match: "For us the message is clear: it's not about style or passing, it's about winning the game."

Hull boss and former Sunderland manager Steve Bruce believes his side can take a big step towards survival with a win that would take them seven points clear of the drop zone.

He said: "With our goal difference too it's worth an extra point. That would be a huge gap with 10 games to go."

Bruce has defended Maynor Figueroa, who was accused of hurting Stoke's Stephen Ireland on Saturday.

Bruce said: "Ireland committed the worst challenge on David Meyler. He wouldn't have been on the pitch if the referee had done his job."
