According to the Telegraph, the Blues are lining up the 43-year-old to replace Petr Cech at the end of the season.
Cech lost his place as Chelsea No.1 when Thibaut Courtois returned to the club following a three-year loan spell at Atletico Madrid.
Cech has been first choice for ten seasons, but has only played 14 times this campaign - just five of which have come in the league.

Friedel is currently third choice at Tottenham behind Hugo Lloris and Michel Vorm and hasn't played a game this season.
Chelsea are still hoping Cech will stay beyond the summer but are making contingency plans which could include Friedel.
Reports indicate QPR keeper Rob Green, Celtic's Craig Gordon, Aston Villa’s Shay Given, and Norwich City’s John Ruddy are also under consideration if Cech does decide to move on.
