Chelsea celebrate their fifth League Cup triumph as Spurs boss Pochettino comforts his players

John Terry fired home through Harry Kane's legs to hand the Blues a first-half lead before Kyle Walker prodded into his own net after the break.

In reply, Chrisitan Eriksen hit the crossbar and Harry Kane went close for Spurs on a soggy evening in west London.

But Chelsea somewhat eased to victory thanks to a resilient Terry-Gary Cahill partnership in central defence.

Spurs beat Chelsea 2-1 in the League Cup final back in 2008 - something of a shock result at the time - and Mauricio Pochettino's men started at Wembley in equally confident mood.

Eriksen fired a warning shot when he thundered a free-kick onto the crossbar 10 minutes in and Danny Rose dragged an effort wide.

Tensions flared midway through the half when Diego Costa appeared to slap Nabil Bentaleb in the face when protecting the ball, before Eric Dier left a boot in on Costa to pick up a yellow.

But it was Terry who broke the deadlock when he half-volleyed home from a scrambled corner, the ball deflecting off Harry Kane and into the net.

Chelsea's tails were up as Terry's fellow centre-half Gary Cahill headed a powerful effort into Hugo Lloris' hands before the break, while Cesc Fabregas forced another strong save out of the stopper early in the second half.

The pressure was mounting and indeed it broke once more as Costa benefitted from a stroke of fortune to double the Blues' lead.

Fabregas fed a simple ball through to the striker who, on the left side of the box, jinked towards the byline and fired low across the goal, only for Walker to fling out a leg and direct the ball past the stranded Lloris for a second time.

The goal somewhat killed the game as Chelsea saw the clock tick down and although Kane came close with a late effort the Blues ensured their first domestic cup victory since 2012 was earned without a hitch.
