Garry Monk: Jonjo Shelvey deserves England call up

JONJO SHELVEY is helping Swansea set their sights high.

Garry Monk heaped praise on 'great talent' Jonjo Shelvey

And his manager Garry Monk believes the midfielder should still have his own eyes on an England recall.

Shelvey has had his run-ins with Monk this season after being told to improve his discipline following a red card at Everton in November and getting stuck in the middle when his fiance blasted the Swans' boss for substituting him in a game last month.

But Monk clearly bears no grudges and believes Shelvey - whose sole England cap was as a substitute against San Marino in October, 2012 - has what it takes to play for his country again after doing his best to star in this scrappy win.

Monk said: "He will have a chance. He is a great talent with unbelievable ability. He can go as far as he wants to go. It is as simple as that.

"All he has to do is make sure he is focused, his attitude is spot on and he works hard. You forget how young he is, he has only just turned 23 last week.

"Towards the start of the season Jonjo had some ups and downs but when he is focused and pushing he can deliver great quality.

"I have a good relationship with Jonjo, always have. Sometimes I have been hard on him but he knows it is nothing I say to you guys that I haven't said to his face and we have good conversations."

Shelvey's efforts helped Swansea reach 40 points in the fastest time yet as a Premier League club and they are now looking to pass a season's best tally of 47 points.

The former Liverpool man picked out two exquisite first-half passes for Wayne Routledge and Bafetimbi Gomis but neither could hit the target.

And it took a scrappy 64th-minute winner for the Swans to land a third win in five games. Former Burnley loanee Jack Cork was superbly denied by Tom Heaton's first save but the Clarets' keeper could then only claw the ball over the line after Cork's follow-up effort was turned goalwards by defender Kieran Trippier.

Burnley have now failed to win in six Premier League games and with Liverpool and Manchester City next up it is beginning to look tough for them to get out of the bottom three.

Ashley Barnes, who avoided any controversy a week on from his clash with Chelsea midfielder Nemanja Matic when he was accused by Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho of a "criminal" tackle, almost gave Sean Dyche's side an early goal.

But Lukasz Fabianski saved well and then late on denied substitute Sam Vokes, who could have had a penalty when grabbed by full-back Neil Taylor.

Vokes stayed on his feet and did not get the decision with the striker hoping that referees won't err on the side of caution when it comes to giving Burnley decisions after the furore of Stamford Bridge.

Vokes said: "You'd like to think those things don't go against you but you never know. There's a lot of stuff made out in the media and Barnsey has been in the papers all week.

"He got me by the waist. If the ref gives it it's a penalty but he didn't and it's not my kind of game to dive around. If I get a touch I try to see it through.

"There were a couple of opportunities like that in the game we didn't get given but we need to try and bounce back from that now."
