Jordan Henderson and Philippe Coutinho fired in near-replica strikes as the Reds beat Pellegrini's men 2-1 at Anfield.

Edin Dzeko pulled out a superb effort of his own but it wasn't enough as City lost ground in the title race with Chelsea.

And Pellegrini conceded after the match that a dose of bad fortune cost his team.

Difficult preparation for Liverpool - Rodgers [AMBIENT]

"It was a close game but Liverpool won because they scored two beautiful goals," he said.

"But in the first half we lost too many balls, especially in the first 15 minutes.

"After that we equalised and then hit the post through Aguero.

"But in the second half we didn't arrive in their box so we tried to change our style of play."
