Burnley 0 - Swansea 1: Trippier error hands Swans Turf Moor victory

SWANSEA attacked the Clarets with a Cork as Kieran Trippier’s blunder meant Burnley tripped up.

Trippier's own goal condemned Burnley to defeat

Because Burnley old boy Jack Cork left his old club with a sinking feeling after playing a pivotal part in Trippier’s comical own goal.

The Burnley right-back accidentally turned the ball into his own net after goalkeeper Tom Heaton, with the aid of his bar, had twice brilliantly denied Cork.

“It was a real soft goal,” said Burnley boss Sean Dyche. “We have to make sure we eradicate that.”

But he is running out of time. Defeat means Burnley have only taken two points from their last six games. A wretched recent run at Turf Moor means relegation is looking more likely.

They were left to rue a defiant display by Swansea keeper Lukasz Fabianski, who made a brilliant point-blank block to deny Ashley Barnes and later saved well from Michael Kightly and substitute Sam Vokes but Burnley lacked the spark they needed.

Vokes also appealed for a penalty when Neil Taylor tugged him. “He gets dragged around his waist,” added Dyche. “I have seen them given.”

But Swansea had other chances with Wayne Routledge lobbing wide and Bafetimbi Gomis lashing a shot over. In injury time, substitute Nelson Oliveira almost scored from an impossible angle.

But Swansea didn’t need a second. “Forty points is the first point of call for any club outside the bigger clubs,” said boss Garry Monk. “We wanted to get there as soon as we could.”

They have got there. They have secured safety before the start of March. How Burnley must envy them.
