Brendan Rodgers believes getting in the Champions League would be better than their 2nd place finish

On the day the Kop entertains the club that condemned Liverpool to the runners up spot Rodgers reflected on a campaign which began badly and even cast doubts over his future.

The Anfield boss believes that he and his side will learn from the chastening experience. Before facing Manchester City Rodgers reflected: “Your back is against the wall. We weren’t playing very well and when you don’t win you get the criticism.

“You have to accept that, it’s part of football. No one likes it.  Then it works two ways, you either blame everything and everybody or you go away, focus and concentrate on your work and try to find a solution.”

Job almost done in that regard with Liverpool despite their Europa League exit on Thursday night back in the shake up for a Champions League place.

Rodgers added: “There’s no doubt this season has been an incredible learning season for me as a manager. Certainly come the end of it I will be a better manager.

“If we arrive in the top four this year after everything we have been through it will be a greater achievement than last year, absolutely.”
