The Burnley striker, caught the Chelsea midfielder high and late with his studs-first tackle, and the Serbian was sent off for pushing Barnes in retaliation.

Jose Mourinho branded the challenge “criminal” but Barnes has faced no punishment and is available to play for the Clarets against Monk’s Swansea side today.

“I would like to think no player goes in with the intent to hurt another and I don’t think Barnes did,” said Monk.

Obviously the authorities felt the same and that’s why there’s no punishment.

“I have talked to my players about his strengths and what we need to watch for.”
