Russell Crowe may be weighing up a bid for Leeds United

Leeds fans are largely unhappy with Massimo Cellino's reign at the club and one enterprising fan reached out to Crowe on Twitter to see if the Hollywood icon would come to the rescue.

Crowe indicated that he appeared to be at least considering the move after asking his followers if "anyone else thinks this is a good idea?".

The New Zealand-born actor is a passionate rugby league fan, and has revived the fortunes of local NRL side, the South Sydney Rabbitohs - who this week beat St Helens to become World Club Challenge champions.

Anybody else think this is a good idea?

And while it was initially unclear whether Crowe's response related to rugby league's Leeds Rhinos or football's Leeds United, the 50-year-old has previously admitted he is a fan of the round-ball outfit.

He said: "I started following Leeds in the early Seventies...(they) can be heartbreakers, but that's the joy of sport."

Yesterday, Leeds release a statement announcing that he will as chairman of the club when his current ban expires.

And it seems the way would now be clear for Crowe to make a takeover bid if that is indeed something he is considering.

At least one set of supporters are in favour of Crowe joining the board.

Leeds Fans LLP, who are trying to raise £10million to buy a 25% share in the club, want to contact Crowe.

Marketing and PR Exec Sharon Reid said: "We know he’s a huge supporter of fan ownership given his work with the Rabbitohs, and we hope to meet with him to talk about how we can work together to buy a stake in our club and get fans on the board at Leeds United."
