Kevin De Bruyne reveals MONEY was to blame for failed Chelsea spell

WOLFSBURG playmaker Kevin De Bruyne believes he failed to break into the first-team at Chelsea because of his small transfer fee.

The 23-year-old left Racing Genk for Stamford Bridge in 2011 for £6m, spending two loan spells back at the Belgian outfit and at Werder Bremen.

However, the Belgium international failed to impress Blues boss Jose Mourinho and was sold to Wolfsburg for £21m in January 2014.

And De Bruyne insists he would have had a better chance of becoming a key player for the Premier League leaders had they paid £32m for him.

"Chelsea has not been the best choice at that point in time then," he said.

Things would have been different if Chelsea had to pay £32m when I arrived

Kevin De Bruyne

"Being with Chelsea is like being in a different world.

"Manager Jose Mourinho did not explain to me why I was not playing more regularly for the club.

"Things would have been different if Chelsea FC had to pay €45m (£32m) and not €8m (£6m) when I arrived from Racing Genk.

"A higher transfer fee would have potentially handed me a different sort of status inside the club. And, possibly, handed me more chances."
