Roberto Martinez: Everton defender John Stones 'will learn' from red card lesson

ROBERTO MARTINEZ has praised his Everton side for their "character" that produced a 4-1 Europa League result against Young Boys in Switzerland - but warned John Stones still has a lot to learn.

Romelu Lukaku scored a hat-trick to add to Seamus Coleman's strike as the Toffees dominated their last-32 first leg tie.

The evening was spoiled by John Stones' late dismissal, although he had saved a goal off the line earlier in the first half.

And Martinez was full of praise for his battling players.

"It was a test of character to go behind to a team in great form at home. It was a great result. When you see us play like that, we get back to memories of last season. In the league we have felt cagey. Europe is a fresh challenge," he said.

"I have always said that Romelu Lukaku is an important player for us. He ticks every box - he is the complete striker."

Martinez also discussed Bryan Oviedo's fitness after the left-back hobbled off in the second half.

"Bryan Oviedo has put a lot of work in since he has come back. He has had a normal reaction to just coming back from injury.

"John Stones will learn from his sending off. It will help him in the long run. Even with 10 men we were positive."
